Sometimes I'd like to ask God why He allows poverty, famine and injustice when He could do something about it. But I'm afraid God might ask me the same question.

Please excuse this manic post,

I just have to share these super cute kiddo photos, but I also need some mama opinions... so here i go
Ty and Mina both had Christmas programs yesterday,  they both love the spotlight so this was right up their alley.  Poor Ty had no idea what was going on as we had to go back to school in the evening, I could tell he was confused when we dropped  him off in his classroom and then he walked into the chapel a few minutes later to a crowd of parents...flash-bulbs going off like the paparazzi!
He has been singing the song "He's got the Whole World in His Hands" for days,,, in his own little adorable way :)  It didn't take him long to feel like the star of the show and start to "strike a pose" for the crowd.
Yeah, midsong and my boy is working the camera with his best catwalk moves... oh heck  he is such a character!

Now here is the point where I would love some Mommy opinions... I am being super sensitive???  Kobi and Jack had school spirit day today... The theme...NERD DAY.  I was kinda surprised that an Elementary school would go for this theme.  Couldn't it be super silly day, backwards day, mismatch day.  I hate stereotypes.  But you know what this hardcore Mama did,  N.O.T.H.I.N.G.!  I just joined in and didn't say a peep. Way to stick it to the system.
Collin helped Jack with his "nerd hair".  Since he is the KING of dressing up for spirit days as seen HERE, and HERE.  I really hated the conversations that came out of their mouths as we were picking out their silly outfits...  "Mommy, I think I am going to be smarter when I dress like this" and "Mommy can I wear glasses"  Ugggghhhh,  turn the knife in my chest.  "No honey, you are always smart no matter what you wear"  "No baby we don't have any glasses, not yet at least, I am sure one of you will need glasses at some point, glasses are cool, I wish I could pick out some cool glasses"  I mean seriously what is more adorable than a kid, or an adult with a pair of super slick glasses?
so here are my super cute goober kids,  I just feel like they are a little too young for this stereotype...  for some reason i think it is cute if teenagers embrace it... but I was a little disappointed.  But obviously didn't have the heart to tell them they couldn't participate.  What would you have done???  Am I too sensitive or would you have taken a stand?

Okay first of all Ty is WAY to cute and totally has that China Boy camera attitude!! LOVE IT! Oh I can't wait to meet him.

On the second part I can see your point. I probably would have done just what you did. Not like it but let them participate. Jordon is in a play right now for the High School that I think is a little to out their for High School kids but he loves to act so it would have been impossible to say "No you can't do it". I think it's just our job to teach them and talk to them about what is really true and what God wants our hearts to be.

Interesting...I would think that a school the point of which it is to turn out highly educated youth would frown upon any stereotype that makes being smart seem like a bad thing. I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if they gave an equally stereotypical day to other gross generalizations: Mindless Jock Day? Bubble-head Cheerleader Day? Band Kids Day? and my personal favorite: STONER DAY!!! All of these sorts of days would offend, but somehow its come to be acceptable to bash the smart kids by giving them a negative stereo-type...no wonder so many people would rather be famous or "beautiful" than smart. What a great message to send to grade school kids.

Yea, I'm with you. It would be so much more productive to have spirit days that focused on not bashing other members of our society.

On the other side of this coin, Amy...it would be really easy as a parent to say "Its just like superhero day!" at least planting the seed that super smart = good rather than super smart = I have a target on my back and I never want to be made fun of on spirit day.

But the planners of this...I think they deserve a zero...

I don't think its to late...I would have participated to avoided upset little ones, but in the new light of bullies and being ubber sensitive to sterotypes and what we teach our kids about labeling I agree completely they are to young to understand how to be "playful" with it. I think you should talk to the principal about still!!! They could avoid it next year...there are to many other things to do...

and Ty, oh my what a heartbreaker!!! I'm FINALLY waiting on my TA for Will!!! It's so maddening how long they make 800 families wait...we submitted LOI's 2 weeks apart....**sigh** all in God's time I suppose...God and USCIS!!! GGGGRRRR! Pray for a speedy TA for us!!!

Ty is sooo stinkin' cute.. let me get that out of the way first and foremost.
I agree with both comments but have to chime in; as a teacher, I am surprised (to say the least) that their school would have "nerd" in their vocabulary. By supporting and encouraging students to use such a term AND and to have a dedicated "nerd day" is terrible. This just serves to reinforce stereotypes which often lead to bullying and school violence. Educational systems in the 21st century should be more sensitive to this issue and should be far more professional in supporting something like this; as educators we are supposed to be setting the EXAMPLE for our students...
OK.. diatribe finished..
Blessings and hope to see you sometime soon!

I tend to lean the other way. I don't know why they have to call it nerd day (maybe wacky tacky day would be better), but it's supposed to be completely to the extreme. I don't like the idea of sterotyping either, but sometimes I think we make more of a deal out of it than it needs to be. I like what #2 commenter said, though. Why don't they have bubble-head cheerleader day???? LOL!!!!

I think the grown ups at the school are the ones who messed up. Just call it silly day,,,but to use the word "Nerd" ...can't believe they did that. I would tell them that you had no problem with the idea of the day..but they should have called it something else. Wow...they should have known that though!!!
