Sometimes I'd like to ask God why He allows poverty, famine and injustice when He could do something about it. But I'm afraid God might ask me the same question.

"7" An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

A couple months ago a friend linked a blog post about adoption aftermath on her FB page.  When I read this post I realized I felt like Jen Hatmaker had crawled inside my head or peered inside my house and leaked out all our dirty little secrets.  Right then and there I became a fan!  Or her BFF that she doesn't even know exists...either way it's all good.  I got the chance to read her newest book "7" An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess...again she must have crawled straight into my brain, figured out that I have all of this uneasiness building up in me, then decided to spend a year of her life working out my junk. She also decided to eloquently and humorously write it all down and put it all out there for everyone to see.

I read the book in less one day, (of course I was completely attentive to my rowdy brood the entire time)and let me tell you it is a game changer folks.  I love it!  I can't wait for you all to read it too. You can read some reviews and more about it here.   I am having a giveaway for a copy if you just leave me a comment here or on FB.  It has me all riled up for my 2nd annual February No Spend month this year!  I have some bigger and better ideas as I would love to incorporate some of Jen's ideas of limiting excess into the month as well.   I would so love some of you to join me, let me know what you think!!! Please leave a comment with your email address to be entered into the give-away!!

Hi! My husband and I began fostering because here we were...a well educated, supported with family and community, couple with a 3 bedroom 3 bath house. It was selfish to have all that space- so we decided to do something with it. We welcomed our first child at 10 days old, straight from the hospital, to our home. She is still in our care and we are in love. It's going to be tough from here on out...because we are dying to adopt this little girl but her future in not in our hands. I realize that even though we've done this much- there's so much more we can change about the way we live, especially after an excessive Christmas and just before her first birthday...I don't want people to bring her gifts, I want them to DO something greater...maybe this book can help me figure that out!

I would love to read the book! I've been trying to think of a way to teach my 5 & 2 yr-old kids how to be thankful for what we have, and have an inner "want" to give to those who don't (I'm probably wishing for the moon with that!). I'd love to get rid of most of the "stuff" we have, so we can focus on important things. We'll see how my husband feels about that, though... :)

Me, me, me!!!! And then, I'll pass it on to someone else so I don't just hoard it with the rest of the stuff I've got on my shelf (and in my closets, attic, under the beds.....) ;)

Thanks for the post, girl - I want to read it, but don't put my name in the running (I got an amazon giftcard for xmas I can use :)- kind of scared to read it, in a good way. Gotta love the fear of conviction!I read the review and that, alone, blows me away! Wear seven things...?? I'm intrigued...

Would love to read it Amy!! I agree with you so much. Feeling that "after Christmas too many presents" sort of guilt. Seriously, we all know it, even when we, as moms, just even look at what we spend on vacation every year....its a huge sum of money in a world full of children who have little even to eat.

I'm in. I need the book. Out of town and for a week and got home to an unrecognizable house. And the garage... I refuse to go there.
Trying to wish for what I need and need just what I have.

I lost my job a year ago and during this year I had to change my lifestyle and it opened my eyes. During the year I bought a pair of stockings and my mom bought me a pair of winter shoes but that was it! And I'm so happy and proud of myself! I learned how to sew to fix some old clothes. Even tho I just got a new job, I'm going to keep up with this. It really makes me sick that I spent and spent and spent even though I really have everything I need.
Would love to read the book though IF you're willing to send it overseas :)

Sorry to tell you, but I've already claimed Jen as my BFF. She had me hooked with the After the Airport article, but now I keep finding all these fabulous books she's written! I think a trip to Lifeway is in my future to peruse her stuff.
